On behalf of our client, we are seeking a System Safety Design Engineer to join on an initial 6-month contract. This is an exciting opportunity working with Zephyr; the world’s leading solar-electric stratospheric UAS. Working under the supervision from the Zephyr Head of System Safety, this role entails the production of safety deliverables to support Zephyr’s design roadmap, future flight campaigns and type certification.

Pay: £50.00 per hour via Umbrella
Hours: Monday to Friday, 37 hours a week
Contract: 6 -month contract
Location: Farnborough
IR35 Status: Inside
SC Clearance: BPSS

Job Profile

The responsibilities of the Safety Engineer include, but are not limited to:

  • Identifying derived safety requirements and supporting the Zephyr team in ensuring these requirements are suitably implemented and satisfied.
  • Collation and validation of data in support of the safety arguments.
  • Development and Maintenance of the System Safety Case and its various artefacts (PSSA, SSA, Hazard Logs, Fault Trees, GSN, Event Trees, Bow-Ties etc.).
  • Development and Maintenance of Air System Safety Case Reports.
  • Attending internal and external Safety Meetings as required (SSG, SWGs and PSC), representing the Head of Systems Safety when required.
  • Assisting in the implementation of the Zephyr Platform SEMP.
  • Support to Regulatory Approvals and Certification activity.
  • Support to Safety Audits carried out by the product assurance organisation.
  • Realisation of the customer’s contracted safety objectives.
  • Review and validation of any safety data provided by suppliers.

Skills/Experience Required

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate proven solid experience of the following skills:

  • Understanding of Safety Analysis tools and processes including Hazard Logs; FHA (FMEA), FTA, ETA, Bow-Tie and GSN.
  • Computer literate in MS Office desktop applications including Visio, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of certification standards e.g. DO-178/278; DO-254 is desirable (but can be learnt on-the-job).
  • Production of safety assessments in accordance with Def Stan 00-56 (or equivalent civil standards).
  • Ability to critically analyse System Requirements and derive appropriate Safety Requirements.
  • A broad engineering knowledge of aircraft airframe and electrical and mechanical systems would be desirable.
  • Knowledge of Fault Tree Software FaultTree+/Reliability Workbench or PTC Relex desirable.
  • In addition to related qualifications and training, solid and demonstrable evidence working within design/engineering environment, preferably with an aviation bias.
  • Experience of working with the MAA, CAA, FAA and other regulatory authorities would be a distinct advantage.
